(English)
I'm not a person who enjoys winter. I cannot stand the cold, I do not practice winter sports like many of my friends and the lack of light and the shorter days depress me. Not a surprise to feel this way because I was born and raised in northern Chile where the weather is not a problem, nobody watches the forecast to know what type of clothes to wear because the sun shines literally every day. It is because of its clear skies and privileged climate that the north of Chile has observatories of world-wide fame.
However, since I have been in New Jersey, and for a few years now I have tried to get the idea that I live in a climate quite different from my beloved Copiapó and every year I prepare myself emotionally for the winter as one would prepare for a long lasting storm of five months. Starting November I start taking vitamin D and vitamin C supplements to prevent colds or the flu. Winter months can be also very stressful at work, and at home because of the school agenda of my daughters. I have made the firm intention not to fill them with activities after school because they need to rest, play and get bored too. Besides, I refuse to spend my hours and days taking them from one place to another and running around like a crazy person. But there is something about gray and short days that I like, something the Danes call "Hygge". It does not have a literal translation into English, nor in Spanish. The closest translation would be welcoming, or cozy. This concept is present in the kitchen, in stews and homemade soups. It is present in the closet and in the bed sheets, duvets, blankets made of wool or natural fiber. Hygge, it's also a home made meal among friends, or a glass of wine by the fireplace. People say that in Denmark when one has a cold the Danish doctors recommend hot tea and Hygge. This concept so trendy lately, is what I like most about winter, it is a state of being which helps me make winter not only shorter and bearable but also much more meaningful and entertaining.
In the southern hemisphere now they are in the middle of summer. I am so jealous of my friends' photos on the beach that I see in social media lately ... but in the meantime, as the sun approaches the northern hemisphere I have Hygge.to console myself.
Here are some examples of my state of Hygge.
